Technical Lead (Python & JavaScript)

£75-85,000 Remote first The Headlines We’re excited to be working with this impressive health-tech organisation that is delivering innovative technology solutions to support the research and development of new treatments. With significant funding behind them, they are continuing to grow their engineering function and are looking for a Technical Lead, with a background in software development using Python and JavaScript, to lead a group of highly skilled software engineers. Working closely with other members of the technical leadership team this position will require you to balance team management (c. 80% of your time) and hands on engineering (c. 20% of your time). In addition, you will actively contribute to the architectural direction of the solutions you engineer, providing input and guidance on how to build the best possible products. Our client operates a remote first working arrangement and so applications from all locations within the UK are welcome. There will be times when the team comes together in person (average of once or twice a quarter) and the location for these meetings is typically in the South East of England. This position is being offered on an FTC basis and for an initial period of 18 months. About the Opportunity You will work in a hands-on leadership position, owning the technical decision making process for your team and proactively influencing the technical roadmap. Partnering with other Technical Leads within the business, you’ll collaborate on how to build robust and scalable solutions. As the technical figurehead of the team you provide architecture guidance, championing best practice and introducing techniques and ways of working that promote reliability, automation and efficiency. Outside of providing technical leadership, you will also be responsible for all elements of line management of your team, such as recruitment, training and coaching. When hands on, you’ll develop and maintain solutions in Python and JavaScript, using appropriate frameworks that address the technical problem you need to solve. You’ll work across the entire software development lifecycle, producing clean, efficient and reusable code in line with the best practice and coding standards that you champion. Addressing platform requirements is also part of the position, using your understanding of DevOps first principles you will introduce and follow DevOps techniques and ways of working that supports the release of robust and secure code. About You You’ll bring a track record in software engineering and technical leadership, with a deep understanding of how to build solutions using Python and JavaScript. In addition you’ll also: • have experience of managing, mentoring and leading software engineers. • demonstrate a track record in delivering operational and cultural changes required to grow a team • be an empathetic and supportive manager. • have experience of working on architecture design, either when collaborating with others or on projects you have been personally responsible for. • have worked at scale, building and integrating enterprise level solutions. • show a breadth of coding skills across multiple languages commonly used in web development. • demonstrate experience of working with collaboration tools and practices such as distributed version control, code review and continuous integration. • have the ability to stay focused on performance and quality improvement when engineering solutions. • possess fantastic organisation and prioritisation skills, demonstrating the ability to work across multiple work streams and balance the demands of leadership with hands-on engineering responsibilities.
