About the position The Senior Civil Rights Investigator and Compliance Manager at Georgetown University plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance with civil rights laws and fostering an inclusive environment within the university. This position is responsible for conducting thorough investigations into complaints of discrimination and harassment based on protected characteristics, such as age, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and national origin. The investigator will handle complex cases, often involving allegations against employees and third parties, and will be expected to maintain a neutral stance throughout the investigatory process. This includes contacting involved parties, interviewing witnesses, gathering and analyzing documentation, and drafting detailed reports on findings. In addition to investigations, the Senior Civil Rights Investigator will develop and deliver training programs related to non-discrimination and anti-harassment laws, ensuring that the university community is well-informed about their rights and responsibilities. The role also involves conducting climate assessments and supporting the university's compliance with disability obligations. The investigator will assist in coordinating responses to bias-related incidents and facilitate informal resolutions among community members, promoting a culture of respect and understanding. This position requires a high level of professionalism and discretion, as the investigator will often deal with sensitive and confidential matters. The Senior Civil Rights Investigator will report directly to the Associate Vice President for Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action, and Compliance within the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Affirmative Action (IDEAA). Responsibilities • Conducting investigations of allegations of discrimination, harassment, and hostile work environment based on protected categories. , • Contacting parties and providing them with information about the investigatory process. , • Interviewing parties and witnesses. , • Gathering and analyzing relevant documentation. , • Keeping detailed, consistent, and accurate records. , • Maintaining timely communication with parties. , • Drafting and issuing reports regarding the findings of the investigation. , • Implementing and keeping apprised of new developments and best practices in Title IX and civil rights matters. , • Developing and delivering non-discrimination and anti-harassment training for community members. , • Creating and providing trainings related to employment equity issues, the University's grievance procedures, and employee reporting obligations. , • Assisting with coordination of the University's response to bias-related incidents. , • Facilitating informal resolutions among community members in discrimination and harassment matters. Requirements • At least 10 years of professional experience, with at least 8 years conducting discrimination and harassment investigations, preferably in higher education or civil rights context. , • Substantial experience working with diverse populations, including populations of color, the LGBTQ community, and persons with disabilities. , • J.D. required. Nice-to-haves • Familiarity with higher education. , • Experience conducting sensitive and confidential investigations, including in the area of sexual misconduct. , • Demonstrated skill in party and witness interview and investigation techniques. , • Experience in, and awareness of, the sensitivity required when interacting with a diverse community. , • Ability to produce high quality analytical written work. , • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and good judgment. , • Ability to maintain neutrality and establish credibility with a broad range of constituents, including faculty, staff, students, law enforcement, and others. , • Strong and effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen well. , • Demonstrated sensitivity to and respect for individual needs.
