Ocean Modeller
ENGIE FactorySingapore3 days agoContractor
We are building a venture to leverage satellite imagery, historical water parameter data, and other environmental factors to develop a predictive analysis tool for forecasting water quality events such as algal blooms.
Having recently closed a pre-seed funding round, we are seeking an Ocean Modeller to join the team on a contractual basis. However, the position has the potential to convert to a permanent role for the right person.
Our mission is to leverage advanced modelling and machine-learning techniques to address complex challenges in oceanography. Our task is to combine cutting-edge technology with expert knowledge to create innovative solutions that drive sustainability and deeper understanding of the marine environment.
Role Overview
We are seeking an Oceanography Modelling Specialist to join our multidisciplinary team. In this role, you will apply your expertise in physical oceanography and numerical modelling to develop and refine data-driven solutions.
You will work closely with machine-learning engineers, leveraging your understanding of ocean dynamics to bridge the gap between scientific insights and technological innovation.
Key Responsibilities
• Numerical modelling: Utilise 3D simulation models (e.g., NEMO or similar) to analyse oceanographic phenomena and generate insights.
• Feature engineering: Design and derive oceanographic features (e.g., thermocline depth, temperature gradients) from simulation data to improve machine-learning models.
• Data analysis: Preprocess and clean large datasets, addressing issues like missing data, noise, and temporal-spatial resolution alignment.
• Integration with machine-learning: Collaborate with ML teams to incorporate oceanographic data and validate model predictions against known dynamics.
• Research and development: Stay updated on the latest advancements in oceanography modelling and integrate new methodologies into workflows.
• Collaboration: Communicate complex scientific concepts to multidisciplinary teams, including those with limited oceanographic knowledge.
Qualifications
• Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Physical Oceanography, Marine Science, or a related field.
• Strong experience with numerical ocean modelling tools (e.g., NEMO, ROMS, or equivalent).
• Proficiency in handling and analysing large oceanographic datasets.
• Familiarity with machine-learning concepts and their integration with numerical models is a plus.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific ideas to non-expert audiences.
Preferred Skills
• Knowledge of programming languages commonly used in oceanography (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R).
• Experience with geospatial data analysis and visualisation tools.
• Understanding of multidisciplinary workflows, particularly those combining scientific and machine-learning approaches.
If you’re passionate about using your oceanography expertise to drive innovation, we’d love to hear from you. This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic start-up as a contractor, with the potential to extend your role or even become a founding team member. Be part of an early-stage journey where your contributions will shape our growth, impact, and vision.
If you’re seeking an entrepreneurial challenge where your ideas truly matter, we want to hear from you.
