About the position The Design Engineer I, II, or III (Transportation Engineer) position at TxDOT's Austin District involves performing transportation engineering work across various functional areas, including planning, project development, design, construction, and traffic operations. The role requires ensuring compliance with federal and state laws and standards while collaborating with governmental officials and private entities. This position is designed for individuals with varying levels of experience, allowing for career growth within the organization. Responsibilities • Analyzes and recommends approval for modifications to highway maintenance contracts. , • Assists in overseeing construction project traffic control plans and reviews traffic control devices with Area Engineers. , • Assists in reviewing shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures. , • Assists in the development, preparation, and letting of maintenance contracts for the district. , • Assists with design computer operations and plan preparation. , • Coordinates and monitors assigned projects/programs/plans. , • Coordinates on design schematics and assists with capacity and level of service studies. , • Coordinates phases of preliminary design and revisions in PS&E with various stakeholders. , • Develops and reviews engineering-related documents, correspondence, reports, and remediation plans. , • Drives/travels to project/work locations for on-site engineering reviews and analyses. , • Monitors consultant design contracts and checks invoices and associated documents. , • Performs and coordinates the review and processing of Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) submissions. Requirements • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science accepted by TX PELS. , • Valid driver's license required for driving a state vehicle. , • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or must obtain within six months of hire. Nice-to-haves • Experience with highway construction design applications. , • Knowledge of construction engineering policies and procedures. , • Familiarity with cost estimating and cost controls.
