Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Pay: $22.08 per hour

Job Overview
The Heavy Vehicle Operator oversees the efficient operation of refuse and recycling vehicles, collecting solid waste materials from designated areas, meticulously inspecting waste for contaminants and hazardous materials. Subsequently, they transport the collected materials to transfer stations and other waste management facilities, including Fort Totten, Federal IPC, Covanta, Encore Recycling, Davis Industries, Maryland Environmental Services, and other facilities as assigned.
Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Maintain meticulous daily records of the collection activities and contribute to route scheduling by assisting in the determination of pick-up points; and conduct daily checks on all university trash-compactor units, ensuring optimal performance by maintaining hydraulic fluid levels, and promptly reporting any malfunctions to the unit supervisor.
• Schedule repairs and maintenance of trucks and containers; and perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting and emptying heavy recycling and solid waste containers, processing materials, and ensuring the cleanliness and disinfection of recycling and solid waste vehicles, collection areas, and containers.
• Dedicate efforts to ensuring that all recycling and solid waste areas are not only clean but also fully functional and operational; and handle other assigned duties with diligence and commitment.
Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation
Reporting directly to the Recycling and Waste Management Supervisor, and indirectly to the Zero Waste Manager, the Heavy Vehicle Operator works alongside recycling laborers.
This position has been designated as On-Campus . Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. Requirements and Qualifications
• High School diploma or equivalency
• 2+ years of commercial or heavy vehicle driving experience
• Valid driver's license issued by DC, Maryland, or Virginia
• Clean driving record
• Valid CDL issued by the District of Columbia, Virginia or Maryland
• Comprehensive knowledge of traffic laws and regulations
• Ability to operate heavy equipment - for example, driving the vehicle, operating and programming the interior compactors, and operating the lift gate, the steam cleaner and the air brakes
• Ability to learn categories of recyclable materials
• Educated regarding educated the proper management of hazardous waste
